On September 17, the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia held a round table with the heads of garlic farms and regional agricultural departments. The main issues of the round table were the development of open-ground vegetable growing and garlic farming.
Participants of the round table discussed the current state of commercial garlic and seed production. An insufficient level of development of garlic farming was noted. At the moment, the share of commercial garlic produced is about three percent, and imports are ten times higher than the domestic commodity production. High competition and poor technical equipment, unconsolidated pricing policy in the market complicate and slow down the pace of development of garlic farming.
The National Garlic Union should become "an effective form of interaction and mutual assistance to specialized agricultural enterprises, including for the promotion of Russian garlic on the shelves of Federal retail chains.”
As a result of the meeting, the following decisions were put forward:
• to create a National Garlic Union as an effective form of interaction and mutual assistance to specialized agricultural enterprises, including for the promotion of Russian garlic on the shelves of Federal retail chains
• to develop a roadmap containing infrastructure, financial and technological proposals for the production of garlic
